After graduating from University
of Pennsylvania in 1911, Dr. John Kane opened his veterinary practice
in Goshen, NY. Originally the practice was dedicated to equine and
bovine medicine. Horse racing and dairy farming were major contributors
to the local economy.
From his home based practice on St. John Street, Dr. Kane expanded
by adding on to his barn, which eventually became his veterinary office
behind his house. Not only was he a prominent doctor in Goshen, he
became town Supervisor as well. After 40 years of practice, he passed
on Orange County Veterinary Hospital to his younger colleagues, Dr.
Maurice Skyer and Dr. Herbert Mueller.
Companion animal ownership and concern became more prevalent after
WW II. However, the practice did maintain primarily a dairy and large
animal focus.
When Dr. Alan Shanker purchased OCVH in 1982 the practice was about
60% dairy and 40% small animal medicine. However during the ‘80’s
Orange County changed- dairy farms were disappearing and subdivisions
with more housing were growing. Our community was changing along with
the animal population. Dogs and cats were taking over our homes and
hearts. Veterinary medicine has evolved to better care for our pets.
In 2007, after years of planning, Orange County Veterinary Hospital
moved to our new location on Route 17M between Chester and Goshen.
We continue to strive to maintain our personal relationships with owners
and their pets while giving the best possible service and veterinary
care. We maintain the highest of standards that allow us to be a 3
year accredited AAHA
hospital.
Our goal is to consistently provide progressive veterinary care
while educating our clients so that together we can give their furry
family members longer, healthier lives.
