Alan and Animals

Welcome...to Orange County, New York's
oldest veterinary hospital.
Located in Goshen, NY, OCVH was first established in the 1920’s by Dr. John
Kane. Originally the practice was dedicated to equine and bovine medicine.
Horse racing and dairy farming were major contributors to the local economy.
By the 1950’s OCVH had passed on to Dr. Maurice Skyer then Dr. Herbert
Mueller. Companion animal ownership and concern became more prevalent after
WW II. However, the practice did maintain primarily a large animal focus.
Dr. Alan Shanker purchased OCVH in 1982. During the ‘80’s the cows
started disappearing along the countryside, and farms were subdivided to
make way for housing. Our community was changing along with the animal
population. "Dogs and cats" were taking over our homes and our hearts.
As our pets have become family members, owners have become more
concerned about their needs and well being. Veterinary medicine has also
evolved. Our doctors are comfortable with diagnostic procedures such as
ultrasound and endoscopy, as well as radiography. Most bloodwork can be
run immediately in our hospital laboratory or else overnighted to outside labs.
We are proud to be a 4 year accredited AAHA hospital, the highest rating
available for a veterinary facility.
Surgery is no longer limited to neutering dogs and cats, the doctors at OCVH
regulary perform advanced orthopedic and ophthalmology procedures, in
addition to laceration repairs, tumor removals, biopsies or whatever is needed.
As in human medicine, preventative annual well care is highly recommended.
As part of dental prophy is done routinely to maintain good oral health and
pets’ longevity.
